You don’t need to be a master knitter to have fun with wool
Colourful balls of wool inspire some of the most amazing creations. Really vibrant coloured balls of wool look so brilliant on their own that some of them just aren’t quite the same when knitted or crocheted into a design.
You don’t need to be a master knitter or crocheter to have fun with wool. Using your hands and your favourite colour of yarn, create pom poms! Sew them onto a hat and the ends of your scarf or onto the back of a homemade toy rabbit or bear for a fluffy tail.
Make several large ones and sew them together to make a chunky scarf. Hang dozens in a variety of colours to make funky decorations; if you coordinate the colours correctly you can match the decorations to each season.
With Mother’s Day coming up you can craft a bunch of flowers with a handful of brightly coloured pompoms and some sticks. Collect some sticks with extending branches. Glue the pompoms onto the sticks, tie them together with ribbon, pop inside a jug or a vase and present as a bunch of flowers to your mum for Mother’s Day.
Making pompoms
To make the pompoms, cut a length of wool and place between the centre of a fork and let it hang. This will be used to tie the pompom up later. Wrap the wool from the ball in the shape of an eight around the centre of the fork several times. Then, wrap the wool all around the fork several times until it is thick. Tie the strand hanging in the centre of the fork around the wrapped wool and knot tightly.
Gently remove the wool from the fork and cut the loops, making sure you don’t snip the strand tying the wool together. Finally, trim the ends. If you are hanging the pompoms up then leave the strand that ties the wool together so you can use this for hanging.
You can also make the pompoms using your fingers. Repeat the method used for the fork, placing the strand of wool between the fingers on your hand. You may need help tying the pompoms up before slipping the wool off your hand. Take care not to wrap the wool too tightly around your fingers so that it slips off easily.
