Dear Editor, The old Irish blessing said to new mothers, “may you be a mother of a bishop”, has always been met with a tongue and cheek response, but the lovely image of Bishop Fintan and his parents (IC 29/09/2016) showed that wishful thinking can become a reality! It also showed how a family’s faith can blossom into something truly beautiful!
Given that some of our new bishops still have their parents with them we should remember them in our prayers also.
However, contrast that with recent scenes of baptised and confirmed Catholics calling for the right to kill the unborn and one can see that either their parent’s faith wasn’t transmitted; or it wasn’t heeded or they weren’t really bothered about eternal matters. It shows that it was the complete antithesis to the happiness at Ennis, something truly ugly and hate-filled had materialised!
Yours etc.,
Fr John McCallion,
Clonoe, Co. Tyrone.
