Abortion counselling not more legislation

Dear Editor, In discussing the abortion issu. what really matters most is that top class unbiased authentic counselling and sympathetic advice are always readily available on the spot.

This help was not forthcoming in a hurry with the current controversial case of the young asylum seeker 22 weeks pregnant. In the crazy circumstances, I believe the decision of the obstetrician to deliver by caesarean section, when the girl was not prepared to go full-term, was a noble gesture.

Though he saved, not just one life, but, two – ethical and health questions concerning the mother and child are ripe to be aired.  The girl was already deemed suicidal by two psychiatrists. Whether it is a case of rape, incest or an unwanted pregnancy, it is vital the woman is aware genuine sincere help is available.

For instance many girls may not be aware of the following: (1) Not every woman is blessed in being able to conceive a child. It is a special gift from the Almighty Creator. (2) If a woman doesn’t want to keep her baby there are hundreds of couples waiting to adopt it. (3) Remember, if a woman aborts her unborn child she could be getting rid of a person that has the potential to be world famous and fulfilling all her dreams. (4) The person who gives birth is usually healthier than the one who aborts and is also more likely to have other children. (5) Suicide, as a solution, is deliberately taking two lives, while abortion is a decision to take one innocent life; neither makes sense. Giving birth, however, is the decent honest way and can bring great joy.

Yours etc.,
