An Easter chick for the dinner table

An Easter chick for the dinner table

Over the Easter holidays, a fun Easter activitiy is visiting a petting farm to see new life being introduced onto the farm including eggs hatching and lambs being delivered. If you can’t wait until then, create your own fuzzy friend with this pom pom Easter chick.

A pom pom maker is ideal but if you don’t have one, you can make your own model to fashion them. String them up and hang them as a decoration or place them in the centre of the Easter dinner table.

If you want your chick to look like it has just hatched, clean some eggs shells and then paint them when they have dried. Scatter them around the chick on the table.

For the pom pom maker you will need cereal card, scissors, compass and pencil.

The small pom pom should measure 6cm and the medium one 9cm.

For the pompoms you will need one ball of yellow wool, orange, black and yellow felt and strong fabric glue.

To make the pom pom maker, with the compass and pencil, draw a circle on the card. Draw a smaller circle in the centre and cut out. Repeat and cut the smaller holes out of the centre so you now have two cardboard ‘doughnuts’.

Pom poms

Place the two ‘doughnuts’ together and start wrapping the yarn all around the card. Make it as bulky as you can otherwise the pom pom won’t hold well. When you’re finished, snip the yarn and start snipping all around the edge where the two doughnuts join. As you snip, you will see your pom pom starting to form. Cut a long piece of yarn from the ball and fasten this around the pom pom in the space between the two card doughnuts. Tie as tightly as you can and then snip the card donuts to release the pom pom. Trim the pom pom until it looks nice and neat.

Using some strong fabric glue, attach the smaller pom pom to the bigger one. Leave to dry. Cut out eyes from black felt and gently stick these on to the head. Cut a diamond out of the orange felt and fold this in half. Pinch the fold and then glue this in between the eyes for the chicks beak. Cut wings out of the yellow felt and glue these to either side of the larger pom pom for the wings. Make more of them in a variety of colours.
