Archbishop Diarmuid Martin has highlighted the uncertainty surrounding staff cuts and the provision of safeguarding courses due to Covid-19 in a letter to mark Dublin Diocesan Safeguarding Day 2020.
Dr Martin said that the archdiocese of Dublin must consider how best to maintain safeguarding as a priority while facing the challenges Covid-19 presents.
“You will be aware that it has been necessary to reduce the number employed by the Diocese including a number of people employed in the Child Safeguarding and Protection Service,” he said. “However, our commitment to Safeguarding and to the support of victim/survivors of abuse remains undiminished.”
Figures
Exact figures for the reduction in numbers will not be clear until December, a spokesperson for the Archdiocese said, as the process is still ongoing.
They added that every effort is being made to ensure that safeguarding training will continue on line where possible. Over 1,500 volunteers took part in training last year.
