Dublin’s Archbishop Diarmuid Martin has been named an honorary fellow of Griffith College because of his “outstanding contribution, at home and abroad, to Ireland’s moral ethos”.
The honour is given each year to men and women who are viewed as role models for Irish youth.
Accepting the honour, Dr Martin praised the values of ordinary Dubliners, and said as a religious leader in an increasingly secularised country, he is called to reflect on how faith can contribute to education and the grounding of values in Ireland.
“The debate between faith and culture is not something esoteric for the experts,” he said, adding: “It is vital for the healthy growth of a pluralist society.”
