The McArthur family, owners of Ashers Bakery in Norther Ireland is considering further legal steps in its case against a discrimination finding in the so-called ‘gay cake row’. Lawyers for the family have reportedly written to the Court of Appeal in Belfast for clarification on a path towards an appeal against the earlier ruling to the UK Supreme Court.
It is understood the legal representatives wish to confirm that no such appeal is now open to them before a decision is made to take the case directly to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
Aside from the McArthurs’ own efforts in seeking redress in their case, Northern Irelands’ Attorney General, John Larkin, also has the power to refer the case on to the UK Supreme Court.
At the height of the case, Mr Larkin intervened to argue that laws being used to pursue the McArthurs go against Northern Ireland’s constitutional law.
