Attack on elderly nun speaks of our humanity

Dear Editor, In response to the news from India, it is really very shocking that an elderly nun became a victim to this barbaric crime (‘Indian Christians pray after horrific attack on nun’, IC 19/03/2015). The attack on the religious nuns in the wee hours of the morning on March 14 should draw world-wide attention of all concerned who love humanity and work for peace in the world.
I have no words to condemn this ghastly act, a violent rape, by goons and miscreants. This reflects the type of society we are living in. The incident happened within the school premises, which is the sacred ground to impart knowledge to the students, to train them for future leadership. Building character through education, the selfless nuns have to pay such a price today. It is beyond imagination that an ailing septuagenarian nun should become a rape victim. Even the sick and elderly, who need attention and care, are not spared in nightly violent attacks. It is really a barbarous act and most inhuman. Even dogs will not attack the innocent this way.
I read a story of a dog, who protected a newly born child thrown into the open street all night, until the ambulance came to take the child away.
All right thinking people, irrespective of religion and ideology, should come forward to condemn such acts in society. There are evil forces that are trying to destroy and eliminate humanity. If the framework to stop violence and crime is not built, very soon Bengal will witness the total destruction of the values and rich heritage the region has. The incident is a slur not only to Bengal, but to the whole world. It’s only symbolic of the mind-set that such people have reached today due to insanity and immoral behavior.
Yours etc.,
