An Irish chaplain who played a central role in providing support to those involved in the Berkeley balcony collapse earlier this year, has been named ‘International Person of the Year’.
Fr Brendan McBride was named joint winner of the award along with Philip Grant, Consul General of Ireland to the Western United States, for supporting the families and the survivors of the Berkeley tragedy, at the annual ceremony presented by Gráinne Seoige and Aidan Power broadcast live on RTÉ One television.
Fr McBride, a priest of the Diocese of Raphoe and head of the Irish Immigration and Pastoral Centre in San Francisco, was on the scene of the accident within hours, and continued his work at the Highland Hospital, comforting students and remaining in constant contact with the familiars and survivors.
Fr McBride also received the Presidential Distinguished Service Award from President Michael D. Higgins last week, which recognises those who have served Ireland with distinction and have actively contributed to Ireland in a sustained manner.
Sr Miriam Duggan, of the Franciscan Sisters, was also awarded for her work in the medical field in Africa and Fr Donal Doyle SJ for his missionary work for over 50 years in Japan.
