Berkeley tragedy shows need for prayer

Dear Editor, Dr Eamonn Conway’s reflection (IC 25/06/2015) on the tragic circumstances at Berkeley was perfect in its encapsulating of the current malaise concerning the expression of faith, especially that of the Catholic variety. That it took Enda Kenny the day after to even mention that dirty word, prayer, illustrates this!

While society is continually enraptured by the cult of youth, beauty and intelligence, it tries to answer the eternal questions with a banal collection of witticisms from ageing agnostics and ex-religious, which will always fail to satisfy. For the many young and not so young who mourn what occurred at Berkeley, the radical call to holiness is the only sure means to happiness in this world and especially in the next. If we haven’t started, now is the time to begin!

Yours etc.,

Fr John McCallion,

Coalisland,
