Bible stories should be read to young children

Dear Editor, It is certainly uplifting to hear a new campaign in Britain is urging the parents of up to one million young children to read stories from the Bible to their children.

What beautiful pictures and stories with which to engrain their impressionable young minds, rather than the dark brainwashing tactics adopted in communist countries or by Isil in Iraq who are now setting up training centres for 10-year-olds upwards on the use of guns and other destructive weapons.

Despite the Bible being the world’s all-time bestseller, there are still so many today who have not seen it, never mind read it. The new Pass it On campaign in English schools is a response to a series of studies suggesting fewer parents than ever are regularly reading stories of any kind to their children.

Researchers have found that Bible stories, apart from the fact they have deeply influenced Western culture and faith, still touch the emotions of both parents and children on hearing them.

Some of the most famous pageantry films ever made were based on Bible fables.

What family hasn’t heard of Noah’s Arc, the Birth of Jesus, David and Goliath or Adam and Eve?

Yours etc.,

James Gleeson,

Thurles,
