The bishop of the Diocese of Elphin has criticised adults who facilitate underage drinking by giving or selling it to young people.
Bishop Kevin Doran mentioned that a number of young people were drinking at a summer festival in Sligo over the weekend on the diocese’s Facebook page.
He said: “The streets were full of young people, obviously having ‘a laugh’ and enjoying the atmosphere.
“Unfortunately some groups of young teenagers were walking around openly with cans of beer. One group had taken over a dilapidated building for their impromptu party.
Alcohol
“What bothers me is that adults who should know better are clearly sourcing alcohol for minors or selling it to them illegally, and without any consideration for the consequences. If we expect our young people to behave responsibly and safely, then we have to begin by behaving responsibly ourselves.”
