Retired Bishop Edward Daly received the Freedom of Derry this week, in recognition of his contribution to the city over the past five decades. Bishop Daly received the honour alongside retired Church of Ireland Bishop James Mehaffey from Derry City Council in the Guildhall on Tuesday evening.
A motion, proposed by SDLP Councillor John Boyle, received cross party support and councillors paid tribute to the outstanding work of both men in building peace and reconciliation, and for ongoing ecumenical work.
SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan said the two bishops provided a “witness against violence, division and despair” and the city was “blessed by their pastoral leadership which offered consolation, counsel, challenge and conciliation as they were needed”.
