Decision will give more time to prepare and plan for the consequences
Ireland’s Catholic bishops have welcomed the decision by RTÉ to postpone the closure of its longwave transmitter.
The broadcaster had been urged by the hierarchy to reconsider its decision to shut down its longwave radio service at the end of the month, claiming the loss of the service would mean fewer people would be able to listen to religious programmes.
Bishops expressed concern that that the audience affected will be mostly rural, older, less well-off, living in the North of Ireland, as well as the elderly Irish in Britain.
A spokesman for the bishops said the decision to postpone ceasing the transmission “will give more time to prepare and plan for the consequences of this significant broadcasting decision”.
