Whistlestop Tales: Around the World in 10 Bible Stories,

by Krish Kandiah and Miriam Kandiah

(Hodder Faith, £9.99)

This title was pointed out before Christmas last year, as I recall, as a delightfully entertaining introduction to some of the great heroes and ordinary characters of the Bible, told in a story telling style with a particular appeal to modern young readers.

Our choice has been confirmed I think by the award as ‘Children’s Book of the Year’ by Christian Resources Together.

With Christmas looming on the horizon perhaps parents and others in a book giving relationship with young readers ought to give some real thought to buying some really worthwhile books for holiday reading.

Many may think that such a book is too close to being a ‘school book’; but think, if children do not read such a book at home with the encouragement of their parents and relatives, when will they read them? And where?
