Br Kevin honoured for homeless work

Br Kevin and football pundit John Giles were nominated to receive the award by Lord Mayor Christy Burke on Monday night.

Br Kevin Crowley of the Capuchin Day Centre has said he hopes his award of the Freedom of the City of Dublin will lead to a greater awareness of people on the streets.

He said both men are “very worthy recipients” admired for their “achievements and work with those in need”.

Honoured

Speaking to The Irish Catholic, Br Kevin said he felt “very honoured” and would accept the award for “the homeless people and people in need” and also “all the excellent staff and volunteers without whom we would not be able to persevere”. He said he hoped the award would “bring a greater awareness of people on the streets” and “greater recognition of the difficulties they are going through”.

Tribute

Br Adrian Curran, Provincial Minister of the Capuchin friars of Ireland, said he was delighted on behalf of Br Kevin for this “tribute to his tireless work on behalf of the homeless of the capital city over the last 45 years”.

Speaking of his own nomination, John Giles, said “somebody doing the work that Br Kevin does is amazing” and “obviously well deserved”.

Fr Peter McVerry and Brian O’Driscoll were the last people to be awarded the Freedom of the City of Dublin.
