Call for release of South Sudanese official

A South Sudanese bishop has called for the release of a former regional governor who has been held without trial since his December 22 arrest by the national security service.

“All citizens have equal rights before the law and have the right to be brought before a court to be punished according to the law and the articles of the Constitution,” said Tombura-Yambio’s Bishop Edward Hiiboro Kussala said in a press conference.

Captivity

Dr Kussala insisted that former governor Joseph Bakosoro, whose health has worsened in captivity according to his family, should be given the opportunity to defend himself in a court of law. The charges against him are not known.

The bishop recalled how President Salva Kiir has offered an amnesty to all those who have sought forgiveness and reconciliation within the framework of the peace agreements signed with his rival Riek Machar to end the civil war.
