Clergy have called for peace following the attack last month on Fermanagh businessman Kevin Lunney, which saw the Quinn Industrial Holdings director abducted, beaten, and dumped at a Cavan roadside.

At a Mass in support of Mr Lunney in Kinawley, Co. Fermanagh, Fr Maurice McMorrow described the attack on the 50-year-old father of six as “horrific”, “senseless” and “vicious”.

Maintaining that Christians are bound to imitate Jesus in follow his path of non-violence, he said “we reflect on that and it’s in the spirit of heartfelt prayer that we gather tonight and pause as we try to eliminate any disharmony in our midst”, adding: “There must be an absence of all discord.”

Fr McMorrow was joined at the Mass by Fr Oliver O’Reilly who in Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan had said it is important to condemn those who had commissioned the attack.

Maintaining that the directors of Quinn Industrial Holdings are not “usurpers” and deserve respect, Fr O’Reilly said it seemed a “Godfather” figure and a “Mafia-style group” were behind the attack.

He apologised for not having spoken out more forcibly before now.
