Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor is set to return to his Irish parents’ birth place to address parishioners on Pope Francis and the Year of Mercy.

The Archbishop Emeritus of Westminster and former President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales will give a lecture in Christ the King Church, Turners Cross, Co. Cork on Sunday, February 21 at 3pm. The theme of his talk will be ‘Pope Francis and the Gospel of Mercy’.

The cardinal is a close friend of the Argentinian Pope, both having received the red hat from Pope St John Paul II in 2001.

In an interview with The Irish Catholic last year, Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor said he thought people liked the Pope’s “style of mercy”.

“In today’s world, people look for meaning and hope in their lives and for us the meaning of life is to be accepted by God, to be loved by God and to be forgiven by God and I think Pope Francis exhibits that in a very profound way,” he said.
