Dear Editor, In St Brigid’s church, Belfast, Cardinal Turkson said that the duty of a Catholic politician is to reflect the joy and transforming power of the Gospel. Sadly, as shown by David Quinn’s comment piece (IC 05/03/2015 Nationalist parties are alienating Catholic voters), that is lacking in the nominal Catholics of both Sinn Féin and the SDLP. This shows quite correctly that the Catholic politician is a myth.
However, the example set by Bro. Crowley OFM Cap. and his confreres, living out the example of their holy founder, and the 25 years of heroic evangelical witnessing of Willy Herteller RIP shows not only Catholic Christianity at its best, but all that it is missing especially in our political vision.
It is most certainly not seen in attacks upon innocent unborn sick children nor in the “let’s pretend” version of marriage!
Yours etc.,
Fr John McCallion,
Clonoe,
Co. Tyrone.
