Catholics do not want to be passive onlookers at Mass

Dear Editor, Why do so few people attend Mass these days? Many no longer practice their Catholicism for a variety of reasons.

Most do not understand what the Mass is about. The readings are disconnected from what goes before and after each reading from the Old Testament. They are often read as though the reader doesn’t understand either. It would be hard for the priest to explain briefly since, in the main, the congregation is ignorant about the Old Testament.

There is also little understanding of the Eucharist. The idea of mystery doesn’t go down with people today – essence and substance are not explained. There is no opportunity for questioning.

The repeated format of the Mass is boring to the many people who are used to change by the flick of a remote control. Often the priest himself seems to be bored; rushing through Mass. Homilies can be infantile with no relevant message for modern people. The apparel of the priest and the connected liturgy mean nothing to most of the congregation.

What are stressed-out people taught by attendance at Mass? Do they feel encouraged and supported in their day-to-day living? To whom can they go with their questions?

People today are not content to be humble, passive onlookers.

Yours etc.,
