The cause for the canonisation for Servant of God Alfie Lambe, which was opened in 1978, was closed on March 26, 2015.
A native of Tullamore, Co. Offaly, Alfie travelled to South America in 1953 to spread the Legion of Mary throughout many countries. He was of delicate health and died in 1959 at the age of 26. He is buried in La Recolletta cemetery, Buenos Aires.
For 37 years members of the Buenos Aires Tribunal worked diligently for the cause, supported by the prayers of many members of the Legion of Mary from Ireland and worldwide. Statements were taken from 21 witnesses and these statements were subsequently transported to Argentina.
At the closing session Fr Oliver Skelly, Vice Postulator of the Cause in Ireland, said what Alfie Lambe did in his short life “is nothing short of miraculous”, and his “enthusiasm and zeal for bringing people to Christ through Mary make him a role model for young people, members of the Legion of Mary and all Irish men and women”.
