Philippine weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz lifted not only weights, but her entire country following her gold medal success at the Tokyo Olympics.
Ms Diaz’s victory came in the women’s 55-kilogram weightlifting event July 26, which saw her set an Olympic record after lifting a combined weight of 224 kg.
Following her final lift, Ms Diaz, 30, grasped the Miraculous Medal hanging from her neck as she burst into tears.
In an interview July 27, Ms Diaz said the medal was given to her by friends in early July before she departed for Tokyo.
“They prayed a novena for nine days before my competition,” she said, before adding that she prayed a novena herself and is grateful for all the support her “prayer warriors” have given her.
After her winning lift, she repeatedly said, “Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Lord,” before pointing heavenward on the podium at the medals ceremony. She made the sign of the cross before stepping down and shouting, “Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!” (Long live the Philippines!)
Ms Diaz’s displays of faith didn’t go unnoticed by her countrymen and women, who took to social media to express their admiration.
“We admire her devotion to the Blessed Mother as she carried in her victory her great faith in God,” said Archbishop Romulo Valles, president of the country’s bishops’ conference.
“Hidilyn is a true weightlifter who draws her strength from her love for the country and her deep Catholic Faith.”
Inspiration
Cardinal Jose Advincula of Manila said Ms Diaz gave inspiration to all Filipinos.
“Thank you, Hidilyn, for the tremendous honour you have bestowed on our country,” he said on Church-run Radio Veritas.
“Your success gives light, inspiration, and hope to all of us, especially in these difficult times,” he said, continuing “Thank you for the testimony of your strong faith in God and deep love for the Blessed Virgin Mary.
“Thank you for reminding us that there is no real success if it does not come from God.”
