The tenure of Dr Sean Rainbird at the National Gallery ended in September. During his reign he was active in bringing to the Merrion Square Gallery a series of European derived exhibitions which were of immense interest, lively Continental experiences for visitors to enjoy.
The Board of the Gallery announced back in August that the new director would be Dr Caroline Campbell, the first female director in the sixteen decades of the institution’s history, who will take up the position in November.
Belfast born, Dr Campbell is a graduate of the University of Oxford. She is currently Director of Collections and Research at the National Gallery, London, but has been engaged over the years with other galleries in Britain and North America.
Inevitably this will mean a new direction to future exhibitions, which regular visitors to the National Gallery will look forward to.
