Christian Easter egg raises thousands for charity

A Christian Fairtrade Easter egg which raises awareness of the story of the resurrection, has raised nearly €200,000 for charity.

The Real Easter Egg is made from Fairtrade chocolate, with chocolate buttons, and contains a  child-friendly, 3ft storybook/banner, ‘The real meaning of Easter’ which tells the story of the crucifixion and resurrection. The larger Premium Peace Edition contains an olive wood key ring made in Bethlehem.

There is also a charitable donation for every 150g egg sold and more than €189,000 has been donated from sales already.

The egg was created in Britain by David Marshall in 2010 when he was given a gift of an Easter egg which said “Easter is the festival of chocolate and loveliness”, and he decided to create an egg which would reclaim Easter as a Christian celebration.

This is the second year The Real Easter Egg has been sold in Ireland and is available exclusively in Tesco costing €5 upwards.
