Concerns for religious freedom raised ahead of referendum

A high-profile group of clergy and lay faithful from various Christian denominations have raised concerns that the introduction of same-sex marriage could lead to the violation of religious freedom here.

The cross-denominational group, led by Catholic Bishop Kevin Doran of Elphin and Church of Ireland Bishop Ferran Glenfield of Kilmore, warned that service providers, such as photographers and caterers at weddings, “would be acting illegally if they were to decline services for same-sex weddings, even though providing these services would be contrary to their consciences”.

The inter-church group also cautioned that “chaplains working in prisons and hospitals could face the threat of dismissal if they preach on marriage being between a man and a woman”.

The group’s comments appear in a leaflet outlining reasons for Christians to vote no in the upcoming referendum on same-sex marriage in May.

Paddy Monaghan, who initiated the campaign, said “there is a need for an evangelical response to defeat this referendum”.

“There needs to be a more measured discussion and this leaflet honours and respects people’s right to make their own decisions,” Mr Monaghan said. “We are not telling people what to do. We are just outlining why we are voting no.

“There is a great deal of confusion among church-goers and this is an attempt to inform them of the key issues.”
