Administrator of City Quay’s Immaculate Heart of Mary Church criticizes loud construction work
A “right to light” may prove a trump card in an attempt to modify a building project next to a historical Dublin church, the priest responsible for the church has said.
Speaking to The Irish Catholic, Fr Pearse Walsh, administrator of City Quay’s Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, criticised how noisy construction work drowns out the prayers at daily Mass, and said the planned nine-storey building would block light from shining through the 1864 church’s stained glass windows.
Although pleased development is taking place at the long derelict site, Fr Walsh believes the current project is more obtrusive than originally envisaged. Planning permission was only granted for the project with 16 conditions, he said, questioning how many of these conditions have been met.
While developers Targeted Investment Opportunities have said noisy activities will not take place during “special ceremonies such as weddings and funerals”, Fr Walsh challenged their failure to recognise daily Mass as a special ceremony in its own right.
