Pro-life campaigners have warned that Tánaiste Simon Coveney’s stance that he favours repealing the Eighth Amendment but still wants legal protection for the unborn is a sign that the Government cannot be trusted.
A spokesperson for Save the 8th said Mr Coveney’s “confusion on what repeal could mean for the rights of the unborn shows that voters can have no confidence in the Government’s promises.
“When senior members of the Government are talking about future changes to legislation that has not even been published yet, it demonstrates that promises of restraint, or respect for the rights of the unborn, are worthless,” she said.
The spokesperson added that the referendum, if passed, “strips away the constitutional right to life of the unborn and places it in the hands of poll-driven, vacillating, politicians. It’s a compelling reasons why voters should, and we believe will, reject this abortion proposal”.
