St Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to his followers and since then the shamrock has strongly been associated with him and Ireland. So don’t forget to wear your shamrocks with pride this St Patrick’s Day and have a go at creating your own.
You will need: Crochet hook size 3, light weight yarn, scissors, darning needle.
Abbreviations: Ch = chain, ss = slip stitch, dc = double crochet, Htr = half treble Tr = treble, Dtr = double treble
Make a slip knot and a chain of three. Join into a circle with the first chain.
*Slip stich into the ring and ch3. Work Dtr, Tr, Dtr, ch3, ss into the ring. ** Repeat from * to ** two more times and then ch6, dc into the second chain from the hook and ss into the remaining chains. Fasten off and cut hanging yarn.
For smaller shamrocks, make a foundation chain of three and join into a circle with the first chain.
*Ss into ring and ch3. Work Tr, Htr, Tr, ch3, ss into the ring. ** Repeat from * to ** two more times then ch5, dc in second chain from hook and ss into remaining chains. Fasten off.
Add a lucky four leaf clover to your collection of shamrocks by beginning with a chain of four and repeating * to ** three times instead of two, then finish off as usual.
Use different shades of green yarn and sew several shamrocks in different shades and sizes together into a bunch. Pin to your jumper or coat and wear as a badge for St Patrick’s Day. You can also pin an individual shamrock onto your clothing. Make cards for the occasion and glue one of the crocheted shamrocks onto the front. Crochet as many as you can and scatter them all over the table as confetti.
Experiment making larger shamrocks with thicker yarn and bigger crochet hooks. Use the same method except begin with a chain of four rather than three.
