About 230 cyclists took part in a 60km cycle from Clonmel to Tramore on Sunday, August 6, to commemorate a much-loved local priest and raise money for charity.
The Fr Colm O’Brien Memorial Cycle, now in its seventh year, began at St Peter and Paul’s Church in Clonmel and concluded at Tramore GAA club, where refreshments were served. Some cyclists followed a shorter 10km route from Waterford to the Tramore ground.
Explaining the route’s start and finish points, Fr O’Brien’s sister Lisa O’Brien told The Irish Catholic: “When Colm was ordained, he was eight years a priest in Clonmel, and then he was transferred to Tramore, so that’s why we picked those. ”
Ms O’Brien said that this year’s cycle would hopefully raise about €5,000 for the Brothers of Charity, who provide services for people with intellectual disabilities and autism.
Fr O’Brien was ordained in 2000 and died in 2009, aged just 36.
