Meriam Ibrahim Ishag detained at Khartoum airport
Meriam Ibrahim Ishag, the Christian woman freed from prison in Sudan on Monday has been rearrested, it is being reported, June 24.
According to sources, the woman was detained along with her husaband and two children at Khartoum airport.
In a sudden move on June 23, a court ordered the woman released from her prison in the country where she had been held, awaiting a death sentence, with her two children. Her second child, born on May 28, was delivered while Meriam was shackled in chains.
Just last week, the Archdiocese of Khartoum renewed calls for the woman to be released, arguing that the charges against her had been trumped up and the woman, a Christian all her life, had never been an apostate from Islam. The archdiocese further revealed that Meriam was under constant pressure from her guards to convert to Islam.
It appears that the continuing publicity on Meriam’s case, together with international outrage at her treatment, led to the reconsideration of her sentencing.
