Derry Lenten scratch cards receive huge demand

An innovative Lenten project in the Derry diocese has received huge interest with thousands of orders coming from Irish dioceses and abroad.

The Lenten scratch cards, or calendars, are produced by Thornhill Ministries as a catechetical tool and a novel way of helping people to engage with the Lenten journey. This is the third year of project, which attracted about 36,000 orders last year and is set to beat that number this year with requests coming from as far afield as England, Scotland and Michigan, USA.

“People are attracted to it as a way of sustaining the six weeks of Lent,” according to Sr Perpetua McNulty RSM, director of Thornhill Ministries, who said the team “fell on the notion” by looking at contemporary culture and the popularity of lotteries.

“The cards offer a variety of activities to keep the momentum of Lent and for the Year of Mercy, we have included corporeal and spiritual mercy into the activities.”
