East Wall community celebrates with a ‘Mass on the Grass’

Dublin’s East Wall parish of St Laurence O’Toole celebrated its community spirit and life last weekend with its annual ‘Mass on the Grass’. Led by Fr Robert Colclough, the parish gave over to a weekend of music and fun with local bands and the East Wall Drama group providing comic interludes throughout the event.

Blessed with good weather for the weekend, some 200 local people – an one extended family from South Africa – took part in everything from baking competitions to face-painting, while an added boost to festivities came in the form of members of Dublin’s football team who paid a visit after their semi-final victory at Croke Park on Sunday.

Even more local, Sheriff’s YC Football Club was on hand to display its FAI Junior Cup and other trophies gained during the year.

For Fr Robert, attending his first Mass on the Grass was nothing short of “fabulous”.

“To see a great tradition of faith being passed on was really lovely,” he said. “What you had was good people keeping a great tradition alive.”
