Dear Editor, I agree with Fr John McCallion’s criticism of Mary Kenny’s “canonisation” of the now ex-TD Jimmy Deenihan (IC Letters 17/03/2016). How can anyone in conscience vote for those who supported the legislation of abortion here? Thankfully, the electorate did not support the legislation with the loss of seats for 43 of those who voted for the legislation, plus 80% of Labour candidates losing their seats, having stated that, if they were not re-elected, there would be no repeal of the Eighth Amendment.
The election results cannot be allowed to lull us into a false sense of security in the matter and all TD’s should be informed that, if they interfere with the Eighth Amendment, which simply says that “the State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and, with due to regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right”, they will suffer the fate of those who lost their seats in the recent election.
We must continue to be a voice for the voiceless and play our part in preventing the widespread killing of unborn babies as is happening in so many countries in the world, including Britain with 200,000 abortions annually.
Yours etc.,
Mary Stewart,
Donegal Town.
