Sir Cliff Richard said his faith sustained him after being “in a pit” of despair following a claim in 2014 of historical sexual assault.
Sir Cliff appeared on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories and opened up on the devastation caused by the incident, recalling how he was left crumpled and sobbing on the kitchen floor.
“I had fallen down because what I had thought was, ‘oh my God I’m in a, in a pit, and I don’t know how to get out of this pit’, he said. “And suddenly my legs just wobbled, went wobbly and I went to the floor.”
After being found by his close friend Fr John McElynn, Sir Cliff came to understand that God believed in him and his innocence.
Sir Cliff said: “And he [Fr McElynn] – he just said to me, ‘did you do this?’ And I said, ‘of course not’. He said, ‘then I believe you, God believes you, stand up. You can do this’.”
