First Latin Mass in New Ross for over 40 years

200 attended first Solemn High Mass

St Mary & St Michael Church in New Ross, Co. Wexford was the venue of a spiritual and historical moment in the Diocese of Ferns recently, where the first Solemn High Mass was offered in over 40 years.

On Saturday, January 25 the Feast of the Conversion of St Paul, with the permission of the parish priest Msgr Joseph McGrath, about 200 members of the faithful, fighting difficult weather conditions, were able to assist at the holy sacrifice of the Mass. The celebrant was Fr Michael A. O’Connor PP, Glenmore parish in Ossory, with priests Fr Roger O’Neill CC and Fr Thomas Kehoe CC both from New Ross parish, acting as deacon and sub-deacon respectively.

History was made when those walls resounded again with the Latin prayers and chants of the older form of Mass, and it was clear that the older faithful had not forgotten their chant as with great gusto the congregation joined in the singing of the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus Dei.
