Football star Luiz makes chastity pledge at baptism

Brazilian footballer David Luiz has vowed to abstain from sex until he gets married after being baptised in a team-mate’s swimming pool.

The 28-year-old, who met his long-time girlfriend Sara Madeira when they were teenagers, said on his Instagram social media account: “I have chosen to wait.”

The Paris Saint-Germain defender also posted a picture showing his baptism in the swimming pool of fellow Brazilian footballer, Maxwell, with a quote from Corinthians as a caption: “And for anyone who is in Christ, there is new creation: the old creation has gone; and now the new one is here.” (II Corinthians 5:17)

He also wrote: “How wonderful to live with you Lord, thank you for loving me so much and taking care of me! My life is yours, and I am your servant! You’re always in the centre of all my decisions! I love my God! Amen.”

The World Cup winner has spoken before of his strong Christian beliefs, saying his faith “gives him strength and inspiration to go out and perform and improve as a player”.

He now follows in the footsteps of his colleague Kaka, who Luiz says is his role
model, by remaining a virgin until marriage.
