Fashion designer Jerry Lorenzo, whose clothing line is famed among rock stars and public alike despite his lack of formal training, has revealed the secret to his success: God.
The LA-based clothing specialist, who, according to Esquire magazine, has cult-like status with fans – including singers Justin Bieber and David Beckham – has opened up about his faith and the impact it has on his work.
“If God’s given you a gift, you want to do whatever you can to honour him through that,” Lorenzo said in his most recent interview, “and I guess I have this gift about fashion.”
Of his label, ‘Fear of God’, Lorenzo explains: “I started at a time when there was a lot of religious symbolism within fashion, much of it very dark. I felt like the fashion world was open to a religious take. But I wanted to offer it and have the foundation be truth, not random symbolism for the sake of looking cool.”
And on the subject of ‘cool’, Lorenzo has a fixed idea very much rooted in faith.
“Cool is fleeting,” he says. “If you love God and you put other people before you, that’s beyond cool. Cool doesn’t compare to that. What I’m doing with Fear of God is trying to show people that you can do what you’re passionate about and love God.”
