Father Ted’s co-creator says the show would have not have been as popular today due to changing attitudes and perspectives on comedy.
Graham Linehan said his famous sitcom would have been different in this day and age.
“The Catholic Church has taken a lot of beatings (over the years) and (now) it would be like kicking ‘em while they’re down. That wouldn’t be as much fun.”
Mr Linehan was speaking on his forthcoming Father Ted musical, which will undergo a “significant transformation” due to the changing landscape in comedy.
Audiences are more ruthless and less tolerant which, according to Mr Linehan, inhibits comedians and threatens the quality of their art.
“In the Ted musical, they have to change, develop and become different people.
“We were very worried about that because when we change who they are it might make them less funny,” he said.
