While many Hollywood celebrities are known for having liberal sexual lifestyles, popstar Justin Bieber has revealed that he remained celibate for a year prior to his 2018 marriage with model Hailey Baldwin, for religious reasons.
Speaking with Vogue about his relationship with his now-wife, Bieber confessed to giving up sex for a year, and admitted that he had a “legitimate problem” with premarital sex.
The megastar added that Christian teaching on sexuality shouldn’t be misconstrued as just “rules”, as living it faithfully out is a means to liberation.
“He doesn’t ask us not to have sex for him because he wants rules and stuff. He’s like, I’m trying to protect you from hurt and pain. I think sex can cause a lot of pain,” Bieber said.
The singer, who has sold an estimated 140 million records, also said that many people rely on pre-marital sex as a source of perceived self-worth, and going against the current wants to “rededicate” his body to God.
“Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth. Women do that, and guys do that.
“I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul. And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result. There are perks. You get rewarded for good behaviour.”
