Gospel GAA supporter and preacher Frank ‘John 3:7’ Hogan passes Frank Hogan

Limerick GAA County Board described the late Frank Hogan as a strong believer of Faith and spreading the Gospel following his death this week.

The born-again Christian, who preached the Gospel at GAA matches for over three decades, died at the age of 81 on March 7 – a date which ironically reads his famous ‘John 3:7’ sign backwards.

Mr Hogan from Co. Tipperary was known for bringing his yellow sign to games, which refers to the Gospel of John verse: “Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again’.”

The Christian evangelist got his inspiration after seeing a man hold a ‘John 3:16’ sign at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in 1987.

Although Mr Hogan was brought up in Borrisokane, he was widely-regarded as a staunch Co. Limerick hurling supporter.

“He was a loveable character,” said Limerick GAA County Board chairman John Cregan of the late Mr Hogan.

“He became a popular Limerick man, was a constant figure at games up and down the country. He believed strongly in his Faith and used his attendance at matches to spread the Gospel.”

Sympathies

Mr Cregan added: “The Limerick County Board would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Frank’s family and friends at this time.”

Mr Hogan died at his home in Castletroy and is survived by his wife Myrna, son Jason and daughter Natasha.

His funeral service took place on March 10 at Thompson’s Funeral Home in Co. Limerick, which was followed by burial afterwards in Mount St Lawrence Extension cemetery.
