70 Irish hairdressers responded to an advertisement for volunteers
A new initiative offering free haircuts to homeless people has been hailed as a “huge success” by Bro. Kevin Crowley.
On Monday the Capuchin Day Centre in Dublin hosted a team from Haircuts 4 Homeless, who cut the hair of 45 homeless people accessing the services at the centre.
The initiative was set up in England last November by hairdresser Stewart Roberts. A recovering alcoholic, Mr Roberts was inspired by a New York hairstylist who offers on-street haircuts for homeless people and the project now operates in towns and cities across England.
Volunteers
He decided to set up the initiative in Dublin at the invitation of a local hairdresser and said they got a “fantastic response” when 70 Irish hairdressers responded to an advertisement for volunteers.
“It was a huge success,” said Bro. Kevin. “The people were all delighted and left here feeling 20 years younger than when they came in. The hairdressers were terrific and it was so nice to see the great banter.”
Irish volunteers will continue Haircuts 4 Homeless at the Capuchin Day Centre on a monthly basis.
