Hopes raised by Varadkar African trip

Hopes raised by Varadkar African trip Taoiseach Leo Varadkar meeting with the Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s trip to Mali and Ethiopia this week has been welcomed by a missionary organisation, in the hope it will influence Government policies.

“It’s great that he’s going to Africa, because it draws attention southwards to see what is going on,” Viatores Christi CEO Shane Halpin told The Irish Catholic.

Speculating that the visit might inspire increased Government spending on developing countries, Mr Halpin said: “It’s 0.32% of current GNP spending, but we’ve been promised that we should see 0.7% by 2025. We hope that he’ll be in a position to increase that support.”

Action to prevent climate change and the forced displacement of people could in turn help stop migration across the Mediterranean, he added.
