How could Catholics support Hillary Clinton?

Dear Editor, I’ve read with the interest the debate on Catholics voting for Hillary Clinton. I simply cannot understand how any Catholic could vote for her. If she had been elected there would have been a continued escalation of abortion worldwide.

Not alone is she in favour of abortion up to, and, at, birth (partial birth abortion which her husband Bill Clinton twice vetoed when it was voted down by Congress and the Senate), but she said that International Planned Parenthood, the notorious biggest abortion provider in the world, would always “have her back” and certainly would have had funding from her government.

This is despite this organisation recently being caught selling body parts to order and working throughout the world to promote abortion with the help of the US Government to date which has made aid to developing countries conditional on facilitating abortion in their countries.

We do not know how President Trump’s reign will turn out but we certainly knew what Hillary Clinton’s would entail. How could anyone who valued human life, and especially the most vulnerable of all, the baby in the womb, possibly be persuaded to vote for her?

I disagree with many of the new president’s proposals but with 59 million abortions having been carried out since Roe-v-Wade in the US, surely it was time to cry halt and try to ensure that this awful slaughter of the innocents would cease? Other proposals that we disagree with leave some room for manoeuvre but abortion does not so, to my mind, it deserves top priority.

Yours etc.,

Mary Stewart,
