How to make your own winter snow globe

Easy ways to make something ordinary into something magical

Lots of scenes spring to mind during winter: a reindeer grazing, Santa laughing, Christmas trees twinkling and a nativity scene. All of these images look even more special when they are covered with snow. Create your own dream winter wonderland with a DIY snow globe.

Snow globes are never tiring to look at. You could even get lost gazing into some of the most detailed ones. Collect little Christmas ornaments to include in your project; Christmas cake toppers and doll’s house ornaments are ideal for this. Have a go at crafting your own ornaments to place inside the snow globe.

Change the colour of the glitter you add to the jar or include some of the tiniest Christmas sequins you can find.

For each home-made snow globe, you will need a jam jar, Christmas ornaments to fit inside the jar, glue, glitter and water.

Wash the jam jars thoroughly and then leave aside to dry. Snow globes should look crystal clear so if there are traces of the sticky label left on the jar, scrub it off until smooth.

First place the ornament on the jam jar lid and place the jar over the ornament to see if it fits. Mark the spot where you will secure the ornament and then glue this onto the lid. Leave to dry for a few hours or ideally overnight. The glue needs to be completely dry so you don’t risk the ornament falling off inside the jar once you have screwed the lid on. Fill the jar with cold water from the tap, sprinkle in some glitter very carefully to avoid clumping.

To do this you can add a little, screw the lid onto the jar and shake and then remove the lid and add some more glitter. Screw the lid on tightly so that the water doesn’t leak out. Shake the jar and watch the glitter fall down on the ornament.

Hunt down giant jam jars to include larger ornaments or several miniature ones for an even grander snow globe. Make a whole bunch of them and line them up on a shelf or the fire place, or your bedside table so you can gaze at them before you fall asleep.
