Two Irish bishops will be part of an international delegation visiting the Holy Land next week to show support for the Christian community in Gaza.
Joining a delegation of 14 prelates from Europe, America and South Africa who will travel to the Holy Land from January 11-15, Bishop Kieran O’Reilly, the newly appointed Archbishop of Cashel & Emly, and Bishop Raymond Browne of Kerry will meet and speak with Christian communities and elected officials.
Speaking to The Irish Catholic this week, Bishop Browne said the trip was one of “prayer and pilgrimage”, but also of “encouragement and persuasion” to look at how all sides could be cared for under intense political and social-economic pressure.
“We are mindful that the situation is very difficult for all the churches in the Holy Land, but especially for Christians, being a minority. We want to support the local Church in their pastoral work in the service of the community and also to gain an up-to-date understanding of the situation.”
The Irish bishops will be accompanied on their itinerary by Caoimhe de Barra, director of Trócaire’s international division.
