Papal comments on the importance of countries working together “resonate strongly” with Ireland’s foreign policy, the Irish ambassador to the Holy See has said.
Monday saw Pope Francis address members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Vatican, warning that the re-emergence of populist and nationalist ideologies is threatening the stability of international organisations and marginalising the most vulnerable countries.
Priorities
“The Pope’s address was wide-ranging and detailed and we will be giving it close examination in the coming days,” Ambassador Derek Hannon told The Irish Catholic. “His remarks on multilateralism in particular resonate strongly with Ireland’s foreign policy priorities,” he continued.
In the annual address, the Pontiff said the establishment of the League of Nations had ushered in a new era of multilateral diplomacy based on goodwill, readiness among nations to deal fairly and honestly with each other and openness to compromise, but that the lack of any one of these results in nations seeking unilateral solutions and the domination of the weak by the powerful.
