An electrical fault left them suspended as they were making their way to the ground floor on Friday evening
An Irish nun is recovering in hospital after being trapped in a lift in Rome for three days without food or water.
The 58-year-old nun and a 68-year-old colleague from New Zealand became stuck between floors in the Marist Sisters’ convent on Via Aurelia for the weekend according to Il Messaggero.
An electrical fault left them suspended as they were making their way to the ground floor on Friday evening.
The building was empty so their cries for help were unheard and they did not have a mobile phone.
They were finally rescued on Monday, when a cleaner received no answer at the door and notified the police at San Pietro, who were able to gain access using a spare set of keys kept by another religious institute nearby.
“Is there anyone there?” one of the officers called out, while his colleague climbed the stairs.
“Yes, we are here in the lift,” the nuns responded in a faint whisper.
Once released, the nuns thanked the police officers and said they had “prayed so much” during the ordeal.
The women, who were guests of the Marist Sisters, are being treated for dehydration at the San Carlo di Nancy hospital.
