An Irish priest has been appointed by Pope Francis to a select committee tasked with streamlining and modernising the Vatican’s many communications structures.
Meath-born Msgr Paul Tighe, secretary of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications and one-time director of the Archdiocese of Dublin’s public affairs office, has previously served as secretary of an 11-member commission which submitted proposals on how the Holy See’s media operations could be brought up to date.
The new committee has the job of implementing those proposals by better coordinating Rome’s communication channels and adapting them to changing media consumption trends.
The other committee members are Msgr Dario Vigano, director of the Vatican Television Centre, Fr Antonio Spadaro SJ, director of the Jesuit journal La Civilta Cattolica, Msgr Lucio Adrian Ruiz, head of the Vatican Internet Service and the Vatican’s telecommunications office, and Paolo Nusiner, managing director of the Italian bishops’ conference daily newspaper.
