Dear Editor, In relation to Fr Oliver Rafferty’s concerns about the content of the theology courses in St Patrick’s College (‘Maynooth rejects claim it pays ‘lip service’ to theology’ IC 03/12/2015). Msgr Hugh Connolly should not be placed in the position where he feels compelled to defend the college of which he is president.
My experience of priests reflects the views of Msgr Connolly. They are competent theologically and, significantly, they continue to read theology. Almost every week in homilies in my parish we hear quotes from what our priests have been reading. Many of us purchase the books to which they refer. Amazon should pay them a commission!
If we have concerns we are encouraged to raise these at pastoral council meetings or see the priests personally. Their door is always open.
We need to rediscover the virtues of solidarity, brotherhood and, above all, love. It would be better if we concentrated our energies on dealing with the many external threats that face the Church. Surely we already have the structures, however imperfect, for resolving internal differences. Let us use them or, if required, let us improve them.
Yours etc.,
Michael J. Boyd,
Newcastle, Co. Down.
